You were spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were not free from the power of your sinful self. But God has now brought you to life with Christ… —Colossians 2:13 (GNT)
As you grow in your relationship with God, you must understand the freedom that is yours through Jesus Christ. Before coming to Christ, you were separated from God by sin, but through His death and resurrection, Jesus made a way for you to receive forgiveness and new life. You no longer have to live as though sin and the spiritual forces opposed to God have the final authority over your life. Unfortunately, some believers continue to live in fear because they do not fully understand what Christ has accomplished for them. They become preoccupied with spiritual threats and forget to focus on the victory and freedom found in Jesus.
Someone might ask, “But what does it mean to be set free from the ruling spirits of the universe?” In Colossians 2:8, Paul warns believers against being deceived by teachings based on human traditions and the elemental spiritual principles of the world rather than Christ. In Colossians 2:15, he explains that Christ disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities through His victory. This reminds you that your confidence must rest in Christ, not in fear of spiritual powers. Your freedom does not mean that you will never face temptation or opposition; it means that you can stand in the truth of Christ’s victory and refuse to return to the bondage of sin.
Therefore, make a conscious decision to live in the freedom Christ has given you. Refuse to let fear, superstition, or condemnation control your life. Study God’s Word, walk in obedience, and depend on Christ when you face temptation or spiritual struggles. Do not allow fear of unseen powers to distract you from growing in your relationship with God. Keep your attention on Jesus, who is the foundation of your hope and the One through whom you have received new life.
