But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; — Matthew 5:34 (NKJV)

Often during conversations, people resort to swearing by various things just to prove a point. In some extreme cases, individuals even visit a shrine to swear an oath before finalizing a business deal. But is this really the right path to take? As believers, we know this practice is completely wrong.

No matter what situation you find yourself in, never swear by anything or for any reason. Jesus gave an elaborate explanation for this command to show us why it matters. He explicitly warned us against making casual oaths in our daily lives saying:

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” — Matthew 5:33-37 (NKJV)

Did you catch that deep truth? Regardless of the circumstances, follow the counsel of Scripture and simply let your “Yes” be “Yes” and your “No” be “No.” Tough situations might pressure you to compromise, but you must stand your ground and honor God’s word. No one can force you to swear against your will, so avoid it entirely and do not even joke about it. Swearing carries serious negative implications that you do not want in your life. Hallelujah!

Today’s Rhema

No matter the situation or circumstances, do not swear!

Prayer

Father, I thank You for reminding me of this wonderful truth. From today, my “Yes” will be “Yes,” and my “No” will be “No,” in Jesus’ name. Amen.
