You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry). —Colossians 3:5 (GNT)
Beloved, one of the things you must do as you grow in your relationship with God is learn to deal decisively with sinful desires. Becoming a Christian does not mean that you will never experience temptation, but it does mean that you are called to stop allowing sinful desires to control your actions. Unfortunately, some believers try to maintain their relationship with God while deliberately making room for habits they know are wrong. They excuse their behavior, hoping it will eventually go away on its own.
However, God’s Word calls you to take the issue of sin seriously. Avoid it like the plague, and make choices that support the new life you have received through Christ.
Someone might ask, “But how do I put earthly desires to death when I still struggle with temptation?” You begin by acknowledging the areas where you are vulnerable and refusing to make excuses for what is wrong. You must learn to avoid situations that repeatedly lead you into sin, renew your mind with God’s Word, and seek godly support when necessary. Remember, the Bible says:
…let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature. —Galatians 5:16 (GNT)
Did you see that? This reminds you that overcoming sinful desires involves depending on the Holy Spirit and choosing to follow His guidance rather than giving in to every impulse.
Therefore, I admonish you today to make a conscious decision to deal with sinful habits instead of protecting them. Be honest with God about your struggles, seek His grace, and take practical steps to change. If certain relationships, environments, or activities continually encourage you to sin, establish appropriate boundaries. Do not wait until a habit has caused serious damage before you take it seriously. As you walk in obedience and depend on the Holy Spirit, you can grow in self-control and develop a life that honors God.
Today’s Rhema

Father, I thank You for the new life I have in Christ. Give me the grace to overcome sinful desires and the wisdom to recognize situations that weaken my obedience. Help me to walk in the Spirit, renew my mind with Your Word, and live a life that pleases You, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
