Nor is it fitting for you to use language which is obscene, profane, or vulgar. Rather you should give thanks to God. —Ephesians 5:4 (GNT)

As you grow in your relationship with God, you must learn to pay attention to the words that come out of your mouth. Your speech is an important expression of your character and can influence the people around you. Unfortunately, some believers speak carelessly, use vulgar language, participate in dirty jokes, and insult others without considering whether their words reflect the nature of Christ. They may behave respectfully in church but speak differently when they are with friends or in private conversations. However, God expects your speech to reflect the transformation He is working in your life.

Someone might ask, “But what is wrong with using obscene language if everyone around me speaks that way?” You must understand that something being common does not automatically make it right. As a believer, you are called to let God’s Word influence your speech rather than simply imitate the behavior of those around you. This does not mean that every joke or casual expression is sinful; it means that your words should not be degrading, sexually vulgar, abusive, or intended to humiliate others. Remember, the Bible says:

Your speech should always be pleasant and interesting, and you should know how to give the right answer to everyone. —Colossians 4:6 (GNT)

Your words should reflect grace, wisdom, and respect.

Therefore, make a conscious decision to discipline your tongue. Pay attention to the language you use, the jokes you entertain, and the conversations in which you participate. When you find yourself using words that do not honor God, acknowledge it and make a deliberate effort to change. Learn to speak in ways that encourage others, express gratitude, and promote peace. Remember that godly speech is not only about avoiding vulgar language; it is also about using your words to build others up and reflect the love of Christ.

Today’s Rhema

Let your words reflect your relationship with Christ; speak with purity, grace, and respect!

Prayer

Father, I thank You for teaching me the importance of godly speech. Help me to discipline my tongue and remove every habit of vulgar, abusive, or degrading language. Let my words encourage others, express gratitude, and bring honor to Your name, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
