“Instead, the sailors tried to get the ship to shore, rowing with all their might. But the storm was becoming worse and worse, and they got nowhere.” — Jonah 1:13 (GNT)
When Jonah tried to escape the assignment God gave him, he boarded a ship at Joppa bound for Spain. Once he was on board, the Bible says, “…the Lord sent a strong wind on the sea, and the storm was so violent that the ship was in danger of breaking up.” — Jonah 1:4 (GNT)
The crew members desperately tried to steer the ship to safety, but nothing worked. When they cast lots, they discovered Jonah was the cause of their crisis. Jonah told them to throw him into the sea so the storm would stop, but they refused to listen. Instead, they tried to row harder, getting nowhere because they relied on human strength rather than divine direction. The storm prolonged needlessly because they resisted the right path, but the moment they followed Jonah’s instructions, everything changed.
The Bible notes that once “…they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea, and it calmed down at once.” — Jonah 1:15 (GNT) This powerful account reminds us that divine direction always supersedes human strength. As you grow in your Christian walk, make it a priority to follow God’s guidance at all costs, as it will save you from unnecessary time and stress. While many people choose to follow their own minds down a path of futility, you can choose a different way. Prioritize divine direction, and your testimonies will abound. Praise God!
