Get rid of all bitterness, passion, and anger. No more shouting or insults, no more hateful feelings of any sort. —Ephesians 4:31 (GNT)
As you grow in your relationship with God, you must learn to deal with hateful feelings before they take root in your heart. There will be times when people disappoint you, offend you, or treat you unfairly. However, you must not allow their actions to turn your heart into a place of bitterness and hatred.
Unfortunately, some believers hold on to offenses for a long time. They repeatedly think about what happened, rehearse the words that hurt them, and allow resentment to influence how they treat others. But this is not the kind of life God calls you to live. He wants you to grow in love, forgiveness, and emotional maturity.
Someone might ask, “But how do I get rid of hateful feelings when someone has genuinely hurt me?” You begin by acknowledging your pain instead of pretending that it does not exist. Then, with God’s help, you make a deliberate decision not to let that pain control your heart or determine your behavior.
Forgiveness does not mean that the offense was acceptable or that trust must immediately be restored. It means that you refuse to allow hatred and revenge to govern your response. Remember, the Bible says:
Instead, be kind and tender-hearted to one another, and forgive one another, as God has forgiven you through Christ. —Ephesians 4:32 (GNT)
God calls you to extend the grace you have received from Him to others. Therefore, make a conscious decision to release bitterness and pursue peace wherever possible. Pray for the grace to forgive, stop feeding hateful thoughts, and learn to respond with wisdom rather than anger.
Where necessary, establish healthy boundaries and seek appropriate help, especially when a relationship involves repeated harm or abuse. You do not have to remain in a harmful situation to prove that you have forgiven someone. Choose to protect your heart from hatred while allowing God to heal the wounds you have experienced.
