Be alert, be on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. —1 Peter 5:8 (GNT)
Beloved, as you grow in your walk with God, you must learn to remain spiritually alert when you pray. Prayer is not merely a religious activity that you perform with your lips; it is an important expression of your relationship with God. When you pray, do so with a heart that is attentive to His Word, conscious of your spiritual responsibilities, and willing to obey His instructions.
Unfortunately, some believers pray without paying attention to the attitudes, habits, and temptations that can weaken their spiritual lives. They ask God for strength but fail to remain watchful over their choices. However, God wants you to combine prayer with spiritual alertness and practical obedience.
Someone might ask, “But what does it mean to stay alert when praying?” It means being attentive to your spiritual condition, recognizing temptation, and remaining watchful over the things that influence your thoughts and behavior. It also means praying with a focused heart rather than allowing distractions to continually take your attention away from God. Did you see that? Remember, Jesus told His disciples:
Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. —Matthew 26:41 (GNT)
This teaches you that prayer and watchfulness work together. You must not only desire to do what is right but also remain alert to situations in which you may be tempted to do wrong.
Therefore, make a conscious decision to stay spiritually alert. When you pray, take time to examine your heart and ask God for wisdom to recognize areas where you need to be careful. Be mindful of the company you keep, the habits you develop, and the choices you make.
Don’t assume that because you have prayed, you no longer need to exercise caution. Depend on God, remain attentive to His Word, and take practical steps to avoid temptation. As you combine prayer with watchfulness, you will be better prepared to stand firm in your faith and prevail over the circumstances of life.
