“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have…” —Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)
Over the years as a pastor, I have seen too many of God’s people living sad and troubled lives. Do you know why? Often, it is because what they received from God was not what they were expecting. Consequently, they get offended, they murmur, and in many cases, they even stop coming to church. They somehow think that attending church has not helped them in any way. I have seen many of these cases, but the question is: is this the kind of attitude God wants us to have? The answer is no, as it is not consistent with God’s Word.
Beloved, a Christian who follows the Scriptures will not live this way. Jesus said, “…Watch out and guard yourselves from every kind of greed; because your true life is not made up of the things you own, no matter how rich you may be.” —Luke 12:15 (GNB). He is letting us know that the things you possess do not define you or make you who you are. Therefore, take heed and guard your heart, because expectations can sometimes turn into greed if caution is not taken.
Does this mean we should not be expectant in life? Of course you should be, but your expectations must align with the principles of God’s Word. Do not become so expectant that you grow greedy and ungrateful. In the midst of your expectation, you must never forget to be grateful and appreciative of what God has already done and is still doing. Hallelujah!

Prayer
Heavenly Father, You are wonderful. I thank You for giving us Your Word to guide every step we take in life. I thank You for teaching me about contentment. I declare that henceforth, all forms of unhealthy expectations are deleted from my life. I choose to be satisfied with what You have given me, knowing that You, who have been faithful before, will always be faithful again in my life. Praise God!
