“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have…” —Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

Recently, I saw a terrible news headline that shocked me deeply. A thirty-year-old mother of two boys murdered her newborn baby boy because she desperately wanted a girl. She already had two sons, and when she gave birth to another boy, she could not accept the reality of the situation and chose to end his life. While many will rightfully blame this woman for her horrific actions, we must realize that many of God’s people struggle with a similar heart condition.

When people do not receive exactly what they expect from God, they often fail to thank Him for what He has already done. In many cases, they continue to complain and express ingratitude, which unfortunately makes them no different from that woman. Their focus remains locked on what they lack rather than on the goodness of the Giver.

Beloved, one principle you must embrace early in your life is contentment; otherwise, you will experience constant disappointment. If what you receive from God is not what you expected at that moment, do not despair. Accept what He has provided and believe Him to do even more in the future. Do not reach a point in your life where you are blind to what God is doing because you are obsessed with what He has not yet done.

That is a dangerous place to inhabit. If you find yourself there, you must make a conscious decision to change your perspective immediately. You may be a spirit-filled, tongue-talking believer, but if you are ungrateful, you are living contrary to the life God has called you to lead. Learn to accept and appreciate your current blessings, and refuse to be discontented.

Remember, the Bible says, “Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” —1 Timothy 6:6-7 (NKJV) Do you see that? Learn to appreciate what the Lord has provided, as this single act of gratitude will open you up to experience more of His faithfulness. Hallelujah!
