“So the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.’” —Genesis 4:6-7 (NKJV)

As a Christian, you must become mindful of your actions as you walk with God. You might ask, “Why?” Actions always have consequences, and these outcomes are either positive or negative, depending on the choices you make.

Unfortunately, many believers today do not realize this truth, so they are not careful with their actions. You will find them making careless decisions without considering the fallout. This attitude has caused many people to lose valuable opportunities, relationships, virtues, and graces. However, this is not what God wants for you. He wants you to consider the consequences before you take action, so you do not end up getting hurt or losing more than you can imagine.

In our opening text, we see the story of Cain and Abel. Both brothers brought an offering to the Lord, but God only accepted Abel’s offering. Instead of trying to find out why his sacrifice was rejected, Cain decided to kill his brother over something that was not Abel’s fault. While Cain was brooding over his plan to eliminate his brother, God intervened.

“So the Lord said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.’” —Genesis 4:6-7 (NKJV)

God warned him to refrain from this destructive path, but Cain would not listen. He devised a plan and eventually murdered his brother. Did this action make him accepted? The answer is no. Instead, that singular choice backfired and brought lifelong consequences. The Lord said to him:

“What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength to you. A fugitive and a vagabond you shall be on the earth.” —Genesis 4:10-12 (NKJV)

All of this could have been avoided if Cain had simply listened, but his disobedience turned him into a vagabond. Beloved, if you do not want terrible consequences to befall you, you must learn to be mindful of your actions. Actions are like seeds, and they germinate after their own kind. I admonish you today to deliberately make the right choices, knowing very well that they will produce the right results. Praise God!
