Are any among you in trouble? They should pray. Are any among you happy? They should sing praises. — James 5:13 (GNT)

In the first part of this series, we established the importance of praying during difficult situations. However, someone might say, “I have been praying, but nothing has changed.” While it is vital to pray, it is equally important to pray according to the right protocols.

I have discovered over time that many of God’s people pray with the wrong motives and focus. They only want results; they do not seek God’s mind regarding their lives or the situation. When you pray this way, you may not see the desired results because you are not in alignment with God’s purpose.

You must understand that the challenges we face are sometimes a clarion call from God to fix our alignment with His plans and will. Often, what we call trouble is merely a symptom of a deeper issue: misalignment. God wants us to address that alignment so the symptoms can automatically disappear.

Sadly, many people try to fix the symptoms without repairing their broken fellowship with God. This is the primary reason we often fail to see results. I must ask you: the last time you prayed, what was your goal? Did you seek to fix the alignment or just the symptoms?

Consider the Scripture again: if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. — 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV). The issues in their land existed because of their wickedness. God wanted them to do more than pray; He wanted them to turn from their ways.

That turning point was the alignment God required. Unfortunately, many believers pray but are unwilling to fix what is broken. Beyond praying consistently, you must pay attention to what God wants you to correct. If you fix what God wants you to fix, He will fix what you want Him to fix.

Prayer

Father, I am grateful for opening my eyes to this timely truth. I receive the wisdom to understand the areas You want me to fix. I also receive the discipline to work accordingly and provoke the change I desire, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
