Man and woman having an arguement

Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you. —Ephesians 4:29 (GNT)

As a believer, one thing you must do in your Christian walk is choose to speak in ways that help rather than hurt. When you are upset, pause before you respond. Take a breath, pray silently, or step away briefly so that anger does not control your words.

When you need to address a problem, describe what happened and how it affected you without insulting, cursing at, threatening, or humiliating the other person. Be clear about the issue, but do not attack their worth as a person. The Bible says:

A gentle answer quiets anger, but a harsh one stirs it up. —Proverbs 15:1 (GNT)

Did you see that? So try to answer calmly, even when you need to be firm.

Speaking respectfully does not mean pretending that everything is fine or agreeing with behavior that is wrong. You can say no, speak firmly, and set boundaries while still refusing to use abusive language or curse words. If you are being harmed or threatened, seek help and take steps to protect your safety. You do not have to accept abuse or stay in a dangerous situation.

If you have used hurtful words, take responsibility. Apologize without making excuses or blaming the other person, and ask God to help you respond differently next time. Keep practicing speech that is honest, respectful, and helpful, and it will improve your relationships and change your life completely.

Today’s Rhema

Always pause before you speak; be truthful and firm without using words that abuse or tear down.

Prayer

Father, help me control my words when I am upset. Teach me to speak with respect, set wise boundaries, and apologize when I have done wrong. Help me enjoy the blessings of speaking helpful words, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
