“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” —Proverbs 15:1 (NKJV)
Every now and then, news headlines feature cases of people who were maimed or lost their lives because an argument escalated into a fight. We have seen relationships torn apart by a harsh reply and marriages put in jeopardy over harsh words. Why does this happen? It is because many have not come to understand the principle of a soft answer.
We must realize that the tongue, though small, can kindle a fire large enough to bring down a forest. As Christians, it is vital to understand this power and use it correctly. Harsh words will always stir up hostility and bring about disaster, but a soft answer defuses anger, regardless of how upset the other person may be. This principle has been tested time and again, and it always proves true. Even if someone approaches you with evil intentions, responding softly can turn them away from their anger.
So, we must embrace and practice this principle in our daily walk. It will improve our relationships and help us reflect Christ more clearly. God does not want us to be aggressive in our dealings with others; He wants us to be gentle in our responses and graceful in our communication. When we adopt this attitude, we avoid unnecessary conflicts and guide conversations peacefully.
Recognize the power of a soft response and use it consciously. Doing this will not only turn away wrath, but it will also attract favor and remove obstacles from your path. As the Bible says, “By long forbearance a ruler is persuaded, and a gentle tongue breaks a bone.” —Proverbs 25:15 (NKJV) Praise God!
