Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” —Hebrews 13:5 (GNT)
As you grow in your relationship with God, one of the lessons you must learn is contentment. Contentment means learning to appreciate what God has given you without allowing the desire for more to rob you of your peace.
Unfortunately, many people spend their lives comparing themselves with others. They become dissatisfied because someone has a better job, a bigger house, more money, or opportunities they wish they had. Even when God has blessed them with many good things, they struggle to appreciate what they possess because their attention is constantly fixed on what they lack. However, God wants you to learn to be grateful and content as you trust Him for the future.
Someone might ask, “Does being content mean I should stop working toward a better life?” No, it does not. Contentment does not mean that you should abandon your responsibilities, neglect your goals, or refuse opportunities for growth. Rather, it means that you can pursue improvement without allowing dissatisfaction and greed to control your heart.
You can work hard, develop your abilities, and trust God for greater opportunities while remaining grateful for what you have today. Remember, the Bible says:
Now godliness with contentment is great gain. —1 Timothy 6:6 (NKJV)
Did you see that? It doesn’t stop there. The Bible goes on to say:
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. —1 Timothy 6:7–10 (NKJV)
How sad! You must understand that true contentment comes from knowing that your worth and peace do not depend on possessing everything you desire.
Therefore, make a conscious decision to appreciate what you have. Stop measuring your progress by another person’s achievements, and learn to thank God for the blessings you sometimes take for granted. Continue to work diligently toward your goals, but do not sacrifice your peace or integrity in the pursuit of material things. Remember that there will always be someone who has more than you do. Learn to be grateful for your present season while trusting God for what lies ahead.
