…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal… —Philippians 3:13–14 (NIV)
As a believer, one thing you must do for yourself in your Christian walk is never let yesterday keep you from following God today. I know this might sound strange, but it is true. Sometimes we allow the mistakes, hurts, or disappointments of yesterday to hold us back, but this shouldn’t be.
As a child of God, when you remember a mistake, a disappointment, or something painful, take time to learn from it, but don’t keep punishing yourself by replaying it in your mind. Bring it to God, ask Him to help you, and focus on the next right step.
If you have done something wrong, admit it honestly. Ask God to forgive you, and apologize or make things right where you can. Then receive His forgiveness and move forward. Don’t keep calling yourself a failure after you’ve turned to God and taken responsibility. Let the lesson help you grow rather than letting regret hold you back.
If someone has hurt you, be honest with God about how you feel. Healing may take time, so don’t force yourself to pretend you are fine. The Bible says:
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. —Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Ask God to help you forgive, and seek support from someone wise and trustworthy. Forgiving someone does not mean you must ignore harmful behavior or give up healthy boundaries.
Choose one practical step you can take today. You might have a needed conversation, ask for help, make a change, or return to something good you have been putting off. Pray for wisdom, then do what you can rather than waiting until you feel completely ready. God can guide you as you take each step.
When thoughts about the past return, remind yourself, “I have learned from this, and with God’s help I can keep going.” The apostle Paul had not reached perfection, but he kept pressing forward (Philippians 3:13–14). Follow his example: learn from what is behind you, trust God with what you cannot change, and keep walking with Him today. Hallelujah!
