Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly…
—Psalm 1:1 (NKJV)
The world today is filled with all kinds of information that can either defile a person or build that person up. This information comes through newspapers, television, the internet, books, music, movies, and many other channels. Because of this, you must be wise enough to discern the kind of information you allow into your life. The reason is simple: your life will eventually move in the direction of what consistently enters your mind.
If you constantly feed on negative news and fearful reports, fear will eventually dominate your thinking. If you continually expose yourself to violent books, immoral content, or horror-filled movies, those things can begin to influence your thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Over time, the materials you consume become building blocks that shape your mindset and ultimately influence the course of your life.
Research has shown that many acts of violence and immoral behavior are often linked to repeated exposure to harmful media and destructive content. This should not surprise us because human beings are highly impressionable by nature. We are influenced by what we repeatedly see, hear, and meditate on. That is why you must intentionally expose yourself to materials that will influence you positively rather than negatively.
Beloved, do not say, “I can handle it,” because confidence in the flesh can fail at any moment. Instead, make a conscious decision to stay away from anything that stirs ungodly desires, fear, confusion, or negativity within you. Even when you are tempted to consume the wrong kind of material, choose wisdom and walk away from it.
Rather than filling your mind with destructive content, cultivate the habit of exposing yourself daily to the Word of God. God’s Word has the power to transform your thinking, strengthen your spirit, and shape your life positively. Scripture declares that the Word of God is “…able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified…” —Acts 20:32 (NKJV). As you consistently feed on God’s Word, your life will continually move from glory to glory. Praise God!
