“Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character.” — 1 Corinthians 15:33 (AMP)

Beloved, do you know that the company you keep always determines what accompanies you? The people around you constantly influence you, either positively or negatively. If you associate with wise people, you will certainly walk in wisdom. However, if your companions lack wisdom, you will inevitably walk in foolishness. If you surround yourself with thieves or the immoral, it won’t be long before you become like them.

You must remain mindful of your associations because they carry consequences far greater than they appear. People often claim they can change their friends, but the chances of success are slim. These influences are often spiritual rather than physical, catching you unawares before you realize the danger. Before you understand what is happening, you are already deeply involved. It is vital to guard your heart by guarding your circle.

The Bible recounts the story of a man named Jonah. God commanded him, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.” Instead of obeying, Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. — Jonah 1:2–3 (NKJV). In an attempt to escape, he boarded a ship at Joppa. However, the Lord sent a mighty tempest that threatened to break the vessel apart.

The mariners grew terrified as the storm raged, crying out to their gods while unaware that Jonah’s presence caused their peril. Once they discovered the truth and threw Jonah overboard, the storm instantly calmed. If they had not identified the source of the trouble early, they might have perished because of one man. This illustrates how the wrong crowd carries immense risks for your life and safety.

You must exercise caution regarding the people you allow into your inner circle. Choose your friends according to the standard of God’s word to avoid becoming a victim in life. Many people have faced destruction simply because they associated with the wrong crowd. As the Scripture warns, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” — Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV).
