Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. — 1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)
In our opening scripture, the Bible clearly admonishes us to stay alert and vigilant because our adversary, the devil, is looking for someone to devour. He constantly seeks ways to take advantage of people and destroy their lives. One of his primary methods is through discouragement, which has unfortunately plagued the lives of many believers. You must decide never to fall prey to this tactic. Discouragement is an affliction from the enemy specifically designed to pull you down.
You should recognize that discouragement is a primary source of depression. It causes people to think less of themselves and feel as though there’s no reason to continue. This is why many of God’s people lose their spark and the zeal to move forward. However, God has a much better plan for your life. He has called you to live above discouragement and to walk in victory regardless of your circumstances.
Challenges will certainly come your way, but the Word encourages us to respond differently. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. — James 1:2–4 (NKJV). This means that during difficult times, God doesn’t want you to give in to discouragement. Instead, He wants you to remain steadfast so that patience can accomplish its perfect work in you.
When you truly understand this principle, you’ll no longer feel discouraged or frustrated. You’ll stop making hasty decisions or speaking negative words because you know your current situation is only temporary. I encourage you to watch for any sign of discouragement and attack it immediately. Don’t give in; instead, rebuke it because it comes from the devil, who wants to see your spirit crushed.
You might ask, “Are you saying I should just ignore these challenges?” That’s exactly what I mean. Refuse to panic or become confused. Instead, maintain your confession and stand firmly on God’s promises. Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving. — Colossians 4:2 (NKJV). By doing this, you create an atmosphere where discouragement simply cannot thrive. Praise God!
