“…trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes… keep sound wisdom and discretion…” —Proverbs 3:5-7, 21 (NKJV)
In the past few years, I have been privileged to pastor many of God’s people, and I have come across all kinds of individuals. One set of people I’ve noted are those who argue a lot and believe that they know it all. They are never willing to learn, and whatever you have to say to them never gets their attention. They are an exact example of what the Bible says: “…ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.” —2 Timothy 3:7 (NKJV).
Interestingly, when you watch their lives closely, they haven’t made any significant progress because they aren’t learning anything new. The only progress they have made is in the area of argument. They keep coming up with argumentative points to explain their behavior, often using Bible scriptures to support their claims, but they never settle down to understand what the scripture is truly trying to say. They do this thinking it’s the best path, but God does not want us to live that way. The Bible says, “…trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding…” —Proverbs 3:5 (NKJV).
People become unteachable when they trust only in their own understanding. But the truth is that no matter how learned you are, you can never know it all, especially in the area of the Scriptures. You must bring yourself to that place where you are willing to learn from those whom God has given the privilege to teach you. If you are going to be successful in life, you must be willing to learn every day. The moment you create an atmosphere where you can’t be taught, you have automatically placed a limit on your growth.
Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you take this truth seriously. Make up your mind and be willing to learn. When you learn, do not learn analytically, where you analyze everything you are being told. No, learn with a listening ear and a willing heart. A good learner leans submissively and is open to new ideas. Make a conscious decision today to cultivate a teachable spirit. Identify sound teachings, submit to them, and you will be amazed by the wonderful impact on your life. Praise God!

Confession for the Day
Thank you, heavenly Father, for teaching me the undiluted word. I declare that henceforth, every unteachable spirit is banished from me, and the grace to learn and learn again rests on me in Jesus’ name. Amen!
