“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.” Luke 17:15-16 (NKJV)

When you give thanks, what are your motivations? Have you ever thought about this? Do you do it because you are told to do so? Or because you have looked around, and you can see the value of what God has done in your life?

Over the years I discovered that many people give thanks, but don’t really do it, with value attached. When you give thanks like this, it is empty. True value comes from the heart, and this is what God looks at. Remember, the Bible says, ”the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7(NKJV). Did you see that? So, while your mouth is giving thanks and God looks at your heart, does He see the value you have placed on the things He has done for you? These are thoughts that should not be ignored.

As a child of God, you must learn to place value on the things God has done for you and accordingly, give thanks. Your heart must be connected to your words. Remember the story of the ten lepers, the one who came back, did so because he saw the value of what Jesus had done. First, in those days, leprosy was an incurable disease. Even in today’s world, Leprosy takes a minimum of six months to cure, and that, with a lot of money spent. But his man was cleansed in less than thirty minutes and he didn’t have to pay anything. No wonder, he came back with a loud voice, singing praises to God.

Beloved, true thanksgiving cannot be hidden, because it comes with an understanding of the magnitude of the grace you have enjoyed. So, as you give thanks this year, do it with understanding, knowing that what God has done for you is indeed valuable.
