“Submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you.” — James 4:7 (GNT)
Now that we’ve established the need to resist the devil, the next step is understanding how to do it. The key to resisting the devil lies in one foundational principle—submission to God.
Our opening verse makes it clear: “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you.” (James 4:7 GNT). Why is submission so crucial? Because when you are fully submitted to God, you won’t be vulnerable to the devil’s manipulations. The more surrendered you are to God, the harder it is for the enemy to find a foothold in your life.
But how do you submit to God? Here are three key ways:
1. Submit to God Through His Word
To resist the devil, you must know what God has permitted and prohibited. That means becoming a student of the Bible. The more you know God’s Word, the easier it is to recognize when the enemy is trying to lead you astray.
2. Live by God’s Word
It’s not enough to simply know the truth—you must act on it. For example, knowing that bitterness is harmful is good, but choosing to let go of bitterness is what truly matters. The Bible says, “Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice.” — James 1:22 (GNT). If you hear God’s Word but follow the devil’s lead, you are not truly submitted to God. True submission happens when you do what God says.
3. Submit to God Through Prayer
A prayerless Christian creates an environment where the devil can thrive. But when you develop a lifestyle of prayer, you cultivate an atmosphere where God is present and the enemy has no place. Prayer strengthens your spiritual defenses and keeps you aligned with God’s will.
I encourage you to take these three principles seriously. True submission to God—through knowing His Word, living by it, and maintaining a strong prayer life—is the key to resisting the devil. Hallelujah!
