For the love of money is a source of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered away from the faith and have pierced themselves with many griefs.
—1 Timothy 6:10 (GNT)

Beloved, as you walk with God, one thing you must always be conscious of is your love for Him. You must do everything you can to protect your love for God. Why is this important? Because if you are not mindful and intentional, your love for other things can gradually overshadow your love for God. When this happens, it is often subtle, and before you realize it, you may find yourself drifting far from Him. This is why guarding your love for God is essential.

Refuse to allow the love of money, or the love of anything else, to come between you and God. Do not be like many in this generation who pursue money so aggressively that they are willing to do anything just to acquire it. Some ignore God, disrespect Him, and dishonor Him simply because they want to make money. This kind of pursuit leads only to spiritual loss.

There is nothing wrong with desiring financial increase or even wealth, but it must be pursued according to God’s prescribed order. When this order is followed, your love for money will never overshadow your love for God. Sadly, this is not always the case today. Many have gone astray because of their desire to be rich. Others have stained their hands with blood and committed all kinds of evil in their quest for wealth. No wonder the Bible says:

Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are caught in the trap of many foolish and harmful desires, which pull them down to ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a source of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered away from the faith and have pierced themselves with many griefs.
—1 Timothy 6:9–10 (GNT)

Did you see that? Their desperation led them to wander away from God and from the faith. But this is not God’s plan for your life. This is why, as a believer, you must deliberately protect your love for God. The best way to do this is to follow the command of Jesus, who said:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the most important commandment.
—Matthew 22:37–38 (GNT)

If you walk daily in the consciousness of this truth, nothing will be able to turn your heart away from God. Hallelujah!
