“Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the [idols and images of] foreign gods that are among you and ceremonially purify yourselves and Change [into fresh] cloth…” — Genesis 35:2 (AMP)
The scripture above is very clear about what God expects from every one of us, especially those of the household of Faith, who are in Christ. Remember, Jacob was not a pagan. He served the true God. Yet, the question in my heart is, “How come he had people who worshiped idols in his house? Why would he condone such evil around him?” This could have happened for many reasons, but he didn’t let it continue. It got to a point where he had to clear his household of all idols. He made sure that his worship and that of his household were for Jehovah.
Having been a pastor for some time, I’ve found that there are different types of Christians. There are Christians who follow God faithfully with all their hearts. tBut then there are those who claim to be Christians, yet when the challenges of life come, they don’t depend on God for help but seek help using other spiritual means.
Our opening scripture instructs us to “get rid of the idols and images of foreign gods.” As believers, we should not be found halting between two opinions; rather, we should focus on the one true God. This was what Jacob did when he gathered his household and took them to worship God. In search of miracles, people become desperate and are ready to do anything. But God is reminding us today to purify ourselves and get rid of those things that seek to take God’s place in our lives. This means God expects us to get rid of and stay away from idols in every way possible. If we refuse to do so, the Bible clearly states that, “…God does not overlook sin and the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness and unrighteousness of men who in their wickedness suppress and stifle the truth…” Romans 1:18 (AMP). Therefore, make a conscious decision to get rid of your idols. Remember, idols today represent anything that takes up most of our time. It can represent anything that commands more of our attention and passion than the one true God.

Confession for the Day
Father, I thank you because I have chosen to worship you, and you alone all the days of my life. I will not look to anyone else for help, nor will I prefer anyone other than you. I thank you because you are enough for me, and you are all I want. Amen!
