“…See that no one pays back wrong for wrong, but at all times make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:15 (GNT)
When people hurt or offend us, the natural response might be to retaliate and give them a taste of their own medicine. However, this response is contrary to God’s will. Instead of seeking revenge, God calls us to let go of the hurt and move forward in love.
Our Lord Jesus Christ modeled this beautifully during His persecution. Despite being spat upon, mocked, beaten, and given bitter wine to drink, He didn’t retaliate. Instead, He prayed for His persecutors, saying, “Forgive them, Father! They don’t know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34 GNT). This remarkable response teaches us that it’s possible to rise above offense and extend grace, even in the face of unjust treatment.
As Christians, our faith is demonstrated not just by believing in Christ but by following His example. Letting go of offenses isn’t always easy, but it’s a necessary part of walking in love and obedience to God’s Word. In our opening scripture, we’re reminded to “make it your aim to do good to one another and to all people.” Similarly, Romans 12:19 tells us, “Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God’s anger do it. For the scripture says, ‘I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.’”
Beloved, when you’re tempted to repay evil with evil, remember that God is your defender. Trust Him to bring justice in His perfect timing. Let go of the hurt and choose to walk in love—it’s the path that leads to true peace and freedom.
