“…A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?” —Proverbs 18:14 (NKJV)

Having established the importance of making sure that your spirit is not crushed, someone might say it is easier said than done because you do not know how it feels when you find yourself in such situations. Well, I will have to disagree with that because no matter what happens in the life of a man, that man has the capacity to actually determine the impact of such a situation in his life. Being greatly impacted by situations is completely a choice. You can choose to be overwhelmed by a situation, or you can choose to pick yourself up and move on. A perfect example of what I am trying to communicate to you here is that of David the King. The Bible spoke to us about the challenges he and his men faced. The Bible records how, on one occasion, the Amalekites invaded the south, and Ziklag, burned it with fire, and captured the women. They slew neither great nor small, but carried them away and went on their way.

So David and his men came to the city, and behold, it was burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters were taken captive. Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more power to weep. So David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters; but in the midst of all these, David encouraged himself in the Lord. (1 Samuel 30:1-6). He moved beyond his emotions and refused to allow the situation to weigh him down. So he pulled himself together and began to look for a solution. Beloved, this is what you ought to always do. Learn to pull yourself together, encourage yourself in the Lord, and begin to think about getting a solution. Don’t get into that moody state and be crushed in your spirit, because if you do, your last hope is gone. Remember, you need to make yourself excel and keep going in life. Therefore, be there for yourself, work towards a solution and avoid being crushed in your spirit. God bless you!
