“Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice.” —James 1:22 (GNT)

Beloved, when you hear the word of God, what do you do with it? Do you just get excited about it and let it slide, or do you put it to work in your life and situation? Over time, I have noticed that when many believers hear the word, they get excited about it and stop there. They don’t remember what they have heard or studied. They don’t apply the word to their lives, and then they wonder why it isn’t working for them.

Well, it won’t, because the purpose of hearing the word is to receive knowledge that you can apply. What makes the word potent in a person’s life is when he or she applies the knowledge received to their life and situation.

Therefore, as a believer, if you truly want to see the word of God produce results in your life, you must be willing to put it to work. As our opening text says, we must not deceive ourselves by only listening.

Now, it didn’t end there. The passage continues: “If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice, you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are. They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like. But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice—you will be blessed by God in what you do.” —James 1:23-25 (GNT)

Did you see that? So, as you continue to receive the word of God, store it up in your heart, remember what you have heard, and apply the knowledge you’ve received. When you do this, you unlock the power of the word in your life and situation. Praise God!

Confession for the Day

Father, I thank you for bringing me this counsel today. I decree therefore that I am not a forgetful hearer of the word but a consistent and passionate doer of the word in Jesus’ name. Amen!
