“…command them to do good, to be rich in good works…”
—1 Timothy 6:18b (GNT)

In Paul’s letter to his spiritual son Timothy, he admonished him to instruct the believers to do good and to be rich in good works. This instruction was not given without reason. Paul went further to explain the outcome of such a lifestyle, saying:

“In this way they will store up for themselves a treasure which will be a solid foundation for the future, and they will be able to gain the life which is true life.”
—1 Timothy 6:19 (GNT)

Beloved, do you want to store up treasures that will serve as a solid foundation for your future? Do you desire to experience what God calls true life? Then you must make a conscious decision to be rich in good works.

In today’s world, wickedness, betrayal, and selfishness abound. As a result, many people find it difficult to remain good or to do good to others. Some have been hurt so deeply that they now believe kindness is a weakness, because whenever people notice that you are good-hearted, they may attempt to take advantage of you.

However, as believers, the wickedness of the world must not turn us into wicked people. Instead, it should compel us to become even more intentional about doing good, so that those who encounter us can experience God’s goodness through our lives. God does not want us to conform to the ways of this world, because we are not of this world.

Jesus made this clear when He said:

“They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.”
—John 17:16 (GNT)

God wants us to be different. He wants us to be the light that shines in the darkness, offering hope in a world that desperately needs it. He wants us to be His representatives on earth, reflecting His nature, because He is a good God and He is rich in good works.

Therefore, as you run the race of life, make a deliberate decision to be good and to be rich in good works. Allow the nature of Jesus to flow through you in your dealings with others. When you live this way, you store up treasures that become a solid foundation for your future, and you leave behind a legacy that your children will benefit from. Halleluiah!

Confession for the Day

Father, I am grateful for teaching me this truth. I receive grace to walk in goodness and to be rich in good works. My life reflects Your nature, and through me, others experience Your goodness, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
