“…then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the Lord…” Joshua 9:14 (NKJV)

Now that we have established the importance of asking the Lord for counsel before making any decision, someone might say, how do you ask for counsel from the Lord? Well, it is not a difficult task. There are three key things you can do to receive timely counsel from the Lord.

First, you need to pray daily about it. You can choose to do this every night before you sleep until you receive answers. However, the most important thing is that you need to ask for counsel from the Lord through prayer. Our Lord Jesus Christ said, “…Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened…” Matthew 7:7‭-‬8 (NKJV)

Secondly, you need to wait for the Lord to speak. Sometimes the challenges people face is that they are not able to wait. They want to ask the Lord today and receive the answer today. It will not always happen that way for so many reasons. So, you will have to wait on the Lord to receive clarity from him. Now, this does not mean God can’t give you a response quickly but most times He would want to do it in His time and we must respect that. The Bible says “…be patient and wait for the Lord to act….”Psalm 37:7 (GNT). Finally, when you hear from God, you must be sure it’s from God. You should weigh it on the scale of God’s word to be sure that’s God speaking to you. Sometimes, you could hear the voice of the devil or even the voice of your mind. But this is where your relationship with God comes into play. When you have developed your walk with God, you will always be able to recognize God’s voice any day and any time. So, do these few things and you can be sure to always get counsel from the Lord. Sometimes, it may come as a dream or a vision. In other cases, it could come as an inner witness but whatever the case may be, if it is the Holy Spirit, you will always know. Praise God!

Confession for the Day

Your word oh God is food for my spirit. Today, I am energized by the words I have received. Therefore, I decree that I will always take the time to seek counsel from the Lord and as I do this, I receive answers in the name of Jesus. Amen!
