As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. They came to a place called Golgotha, which means “The Place of the Skull.” —Matthew 27:32-33 (GNT)
As a member of the body of Christ, you must come to terms with the fact that you have a role to play. You are not in Christ for ceremonial reasons but to fulfill key responsibilities. Through these roles, God’s purpose is accomplished in and through the body. Sadly, many believers today do not want to accept responsibility, preferring to remain visitors.
This explains why the laborers are few, but it ought not to be so. When God gave you the gift of salvation, He intended for you to become a channel through which others will also be saved. The question is, will you make yourself available for the Master’s use? You should, because this is part of your destiny in Christ.
I took the time to study the story of Christ’s crucifixion and realized that everyone had a role to play. There was a role for the one who would betray Him (Judas), the one who helped carry the cross (Simon of Cyrene), and the one who would provide a proper burial.
The Bible describes the crucial role of Joseph of Arimathea:
When it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea arrived; his name was Joseph, and he also was a disciple of Jesus. He went into the presence of Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate gave orders for the body to be given to Joseph. So Joseph took it, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, and placed it in his own tomb, which he had just recently dug out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, facing the tomb. —Matthew 27:57-61 (GNT)
Did you see that? It’s amazing that none of the twelve disciples had access to Jesus’ body. It was a hidden disciple who prepared Jesus for burial and laid Him in the tomb. As if that was not enough, all the men who followed Jesus were nowhere to be found; only the women stayed behind.
Everyone was fulfilling their various roles, and to this day, people are still fulfilling different roles in relation to Christ Jesus. There are those who are for Him and would do anything to spread His message. There are also those who are against Him and would do anything to hide His message. Either way, they are all fulfilling a role.
Make a conscious decision to discover your role in Christ Jesus, and whatever you do, never be against Him. When you find and fulfill your God-given role, you are the one who will ultimately benefit. Praise God!
