“…the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart- these, O God, you will not despise…”- Psalms 51:17 (NKJV)
In our opening text, King David communicated one of the most important truths needed to have a pleasant and rewarding walk with God. He said the, “…sacrifices of God are a broken spirit…”. Now when he said “a broken spirit”, what did he mean? Was he talking about a heartbreak? Certainly not. Rather, he was speaking about a humble, quiet, gentle and patient spirit. He was talking about total submission to God; a virtue that is hard to find these days, and yet it holds the key to doing exploits in the earth and having a fruitful relationship with God the Father.
Beloved, if you want to ever experience God move in your life regularly, you must learn to be broken (humble) before God. You must deliberately drop every form of pride, arrogance, disobedience and stubbornness. A man with these qualities will have a hard time walking with God, because God detests every form of pride. The Bible says in James 4:6, “…God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble…” From this, you discover that what God wants in us is a broken and contrite heart, or you can say a humble and a meek spirit.
So, you must make a conscious decision to pursue after brokenness and the best way to do that is to fast and pray often. I know that some people may not see how important this may be but the truth remains that true brokenness comes from the place of fasting. Why? Because it arrests the flesh and all its wild desires and puts you in a position of humility. And whenever you step into that posture in the Spirit, grace becomes available because God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). So, I urge you today to fight to be in this posture of brokenness at all times.
