Make certain you do not perform your religious duties in public so that people will see what you do. If you do these things publicly, you will not have any reward from your Father in heaven. —Matthew 6:1 (GNT).
In our opening text, the Lord Jesus makes a clear and important point: religious activities such as fasting, praying, or giving should be done discreetly. When such things are done for show, the reward that would follow those activities will not come to you.
This tells us these spiritual practices carry rewards. Something as simple as faithfully showing up for church services has a spiritual value that God notices and rewards. Unfortunately, many today have concluded that these activities are a waste of time. Some even claim that “Christianity is only in the heart,” so outward participation doesn’t matter. That lie has led many to neglect kingdom work altogether.
Beloved, Christianity begins in the heart but it doesn’t stay there — it overflows into every area of life. Getting involved in church and kingdom activities proves we believe Jesus paid the price and that we are partners in spreading the good news (see 2 Corinthians 5:16–20). When you get involved, you become one of God’s trusted co-workers, and through you many will come to the knowledge of the truth.
So I encourage you to commit to kingdom activity. Give your time, your service, and your resources with humility and secrecy where needed, and let God be your rewarder. Refuse to be swayed by passing opinions or social trends that belittle spiritual commitment. Fulfil your part with revelation and obedience, and watch God honour what you honour — often in ways that bless generations to come. Praise God!
