“However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” — Matthew 17:21 (NKJV)
In Matthew 17:14–21, the disciples encountered a boy possessed by a stubborn spirit—an ailment they could not remedy despite their best efforts. When Jesus arrived, He healed the boy instantly. Later, He explained the reason for their failure: “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” This reveals a powerful truth: some circumstances simply won’t yield until you couple prayer with fasting.
Fasting and prayer amplify your spiritual authority. They strengthen your spirit and sharpen your focus, making your declarations far more potent. While fasting challenges the body, it simultaneously weakens stubborn strongholds that resist ordinary prayers. When you combine focused fasting with heartfelt prayer, you unleash a spiritual force that brings even the most resistant situations to their knees.
To engage in effective fasting and prayer:
Begin with a clear objective. Identify the specific breakthrough you seek. Without a defined goal, your fast may become aimless and yield little fruit. Next, set a structured schedule. Decide the duration—whether one day, three days, or longer—and block out intentional times for prayer and Scripture engagement each day. Remember, fasting is not merely abstaining from food; it’s about what you do while you fast. Devote your renewed energy to prayer, worship, and studying God’s Word.
Plan your fast carefully and commit completely. As you humble yourself before God, He promises to honor those who seek Him in secret: “That your fasting may be seen by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” — Matthew 6:18 (NKJV)
When you combine fasting and prayer with purpose and discipline, you position yourself for supernatural breakthroughs—both spiritually and practically. Be prepared to witness transformations that only this powerful combination can produce.
