Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety. (Proverbs 11:14 NKJV)
Following the previous article on the importance of seeking counsel before acting, you might ask: how do I find the right counsel? The process becomes clearer if you follow these basic guidelines.
First, the specific issue you are facing determines the appropriate place or person to seek counsel from. For example, years ago when I wanted to buy a car, I didn’t consult my pastor. Instead, I sought advice from someone knowledgeable about cars. Leveraging his years of experience, he gave me counsel that helped me make the right choice. So, the specific issue is a determining factor that shouldn’t be ignored. No one goes to a doctor to repair their car. That would be awkward, and such an effort would yield no results.
Secondly, seek out someone experienced in the specific matter you need counsel on. Often, people overlook the value of others’ experience, not realizing how much they could benefit from it. Learn to value the insights gained through others’ experiences; their perspective and counsel can be highly beneficial.
Finally, once counsel is given, take time to pray about it. If you feel a sense of peace after prayer, then you can likely move forward with the advice. The primary reason for praying is to receive an inner witness from the Holy Spirit. This inner witness helps determine if the counsel received is favorable. If it is favorable, you will often experience an unexplainable inner peace. However, if the counsel is not favorable, that sense of peace will likely be absent.
So, be encouraged to follow these guidelines, and you will significantly increase your chances of receiving the right counsel. Hallelujah!
