My child, pay attention to what your father and mother teach you. Their teaching will improve your character as a handsome turban or a necklace improves your appearance. —Proverbs 1:8-9 (GNT)
Every time we come to church, we are taught the Word of God, but what are you doing with it? Do you hear to obey, or do you hear only to forget? As simple as this question may be, it is important that you consider it carefully, because it is possible to receive many teachings and yet do nothing with them.
One of the prevalent issues in our world today is that many people receive sound teachings from God, but their lives are not changing. You can find people who have been Christians for many years but haven’t changed a bit. Their faith has not translated into any form of personal growth or development.
They still possess the same character, habits, and attitudes they had when they were in the world. Why? Because they are not doing anything with the Word of God. They hear and then forget, but that is not the way forward.
In our opening text, King Solomon says, “My child, pay attention to what your father and mother teach you. Their teaching will improve your character as a handsome turban or a necklace improves your appearance.” When he says to “pay attention,” he means we should value what we hear and be willing to act on it. The transforming power of God’s Word is unlocked when you apply it to your life. When you do that, the change will be evident, and the results the teachings promise will manifest in your life.
Therefore, I encourage you today to take the teachings of God seriously. Give yourself wholly to them and be willing to apply them to your life. When you do this, your life will not remain the same. Praise God!
