…looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith… —Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)
In the first part of this article, we established the importance of looking to Jesus from the very beginning. You must understand that this is the only way forward. Jesus said He is the door, and anyone who enters through Him will go in and out to find pasture. If you want to find pasture this year, you must begin now by looking to Him as the source of all the resources you require. You must understand that distractions will arise, but you have a responsibility to ignore them and keep your gaze fixed on Him.
You might ask, “How do I really keep my focus on Jesus?” It’s simple: give more attention to every word He has spoken and align your life, actions, and decisions with His Word. Know what He wants from you and do it. Make a deliberate decision to get to know Him more and develop your relationship with Him. Refuse to look sideways or build your life using only your own wisdom. Rely on His wisdom and power instead, and watch Him perform tremendous miracles in your life.
If you stay disciplined enough to look only to Him, I assure you that this will be a wonderful year. When I say “look unto Jesus,” I mean you should pattern your life according to His words and dictates. Let His Word be your final authority and standard in everything you do. Sometimes, you’ll feel tempted to make decisions like the people of the world, but don’t give in. Following worldly patterns will only lead you astray and create a mess in your life.
Make a conscious decision to keep your gaze on Jesus. Refuse to turn away from God’s Word; instead, embrace it and build your life upon it. Jesus taught that anyone who hears His words and obeys them is like a wise man who builds his house on a rock. When the storms of life come, that house stands firm. However, those who hear but do not obey are like the foolish man who builds on sand, leading to a terrible fall.
So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded over, the wind blew hard against that house, and it did not fall, because it was built on rock. But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded over, the wind blew hard against that house, and it fell. And what a terrible fall that was! —Matthew 7:24-27 (GNT)
