“…Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen…” I John 5:21 (NKJV)

When the Israelites walked with God in the early days, one of the major things they did, that provoked God to anger, again and again, was that they always went back to Idols. They were always looking for an idol to worship and yet when God was giving the commandment, God said clearly, “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…” Exodus 20:3‭-‬5 (NKJV)

Now, irrespective of the commandment given to them, they kept on going after idols and this brought a lot of calamities to many of them. The death rate amongst them was very high because they lusted after idols. However, the few who were able to keep themselves from every such practice were preserved and they enjoyed the blessings of God in their lifetime. Now, why am I sharing this with you? Well, it’s simple. That instruction given to the Israelites still stands today. You must make a conscious decision to keep yourself away from anything that will turn your heart away from God. You may not necessarily run after other gods like the Israelites did, but there are so many things today that can take the place of God in your life. For example, social media. As beneficial as social media can be, if you are not careful, it could replace the voice and presence of God in your life. So, you must watch out for all these modern idols and stay away from them. Our opening text clearly says “…Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen…” The amplified classic version, puts it better. It says “…Little children, keep yourselves from idols (false gods)– [from anything and everything that would occupy the place in your heart due to God, from any sort of substitute for Him that would take first place in your life]…”1 John 5:21 (AMPC)
