“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials.” — James 1:2 (NKJV)

When children of God go through difficult situations, many tend to break down emotionally and fall into depression. Others grumble and complain bitterly about their circumstances. But the real question is this: Is this how God wants us to respond? The answer is no.

Becoming depressed or murmuring about your challenges does not improve the situation—it only makes it worse. That’s why God wants us to respond differently. The Bible says, “Count it all joy when you fall into various trials.” (James 1:2 NKJV). That response may sound strange, but it’s God’s way of helping us overcome.

Why joy? Because this kind of response paves the way for a solution. Scripture goes on to say, “…knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” (James 1:3–4 NKJV). Did you catch that? God’s goal is not just to bring you out of the trial, but to develop patience, completeness, and maturity in you through it. And the only way that happens is when you respond with joy.

So, child of God, I encourage you today: respond to trials with joy and not bitterness. Let joy—not sadness or self-pity—define your attitude. Be optimistic rather than pessimistic. When you do, grace and wisdom will be released to help you navigate that season and emerge victorious. Remember, your response determines how quickly you break free from any challenge. Respond with joy, and faith will be stirred within you to overcome. Respond with sorrow or anger, and your strength to rise will be diminished. Choose joy!
