For God’s Kingdom is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of the righteousness, peace, and joy which the Holy Spirit gives. And when you serve Christ in this way, you please God and are approved by others. —Romans 14:17-18 (GNT)

One of the things that is consistently on the rise today is depression. Too many of God’s people are reaching a point where they find themselves depressed, and for them, it feels like a normal occurrence or perhaps a strictly medical condition. However, the truth is that depression is not normal; it is more of a spiritual issue than it is physical or medical. While science may offer many explanations for this phenomenon, I have discovered that depression is fundamentally the absence of God’s presence and His Word in the life of a person. I know this might sound strange, but this is the reality of the situation.

When God created you, He left a vacuum in your soul that only He, His Word, and His work can fill. Nothing else in this world can satisfy this deep longing except God and His divine agenda. Those who understand this and give God His rightful place do not get depressed. When God takes His place in your life and fills you with His Spirit and Word, He produces a deep-seated joy.

Conversely, when He is absent or when people choose to fill their lives with mundane things instead of God, they begin to experience a spiritual drought. It is this drought that eventually manifests as depression. Unfortunately, this is the very trap where many believers have found themselves.

If you want to change this reality, I encourage you to give God His place in your life today. Return to your first love wholeheartedly and create dedicated time to study His Word. Have deep fellowship with Him through prayer and fasting, allowing your passion for Him to be nurtured through knowledge and understanding. At first, it might look like nothing is changing, but if you continue in this path and allow Him to work within you, you will be amazed at how that weight lifts.

Depression is often a spirit called the spirit of heaviness, and this spirit simply cannot stand the presence of God. The moment God’s presence fills your life again, that spirit checks out without delay. I encourage you today to deliberately give God back His place in your life. Interrupt your current schedule and give God your full attention. If you do this genuinely, the joy of the Holy Spirit will be reignited in your life and that depression will be gone before you know it. Remember, true fulfillment in life can only be found in God.
