“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in heaven.” — Matthew 6:1 (NKJV)
In our previous article, we explored the importance of helping others without seeking attention or bragging about it. Now, someone might ask, “Why is it necessary to keep charitable deeds hidden? Wouldn’t it be better for the whole world to see so they can praise me for it?” While it may seem like a good idea in today’s culture of self-promotion, that is not the path God wants us to follow.
There are two main reasons why you should avoid flaunting your acts of charity. The first reason is simply that God instructs us to do so. The second reason is that keeping your charitable deeds discreet helps you secure a reward from God. If you showcase your charity for public recognition, the only reward you’ll receive is the praise of people. That’s it—nothing more. However, if you desire something greater than human praise, you must learn to give quietly. In due time, “your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4).
This principle is reinforced by our Lord Jesus Christ, who said: “…whenever you give to the poor, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites in the synagogues and in the streets like to do, that they may be recognized and honored and praised by men. Truly I tell you, they have their reward in full already. But when you give charity, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your deeds of charity may be in secret and your Father who sees in secret, will reward you openly” — Matthew 6:2-4 (AMPC)
