“…and there was a widow in that same town who kept coming to him and pleading for her rights, saying, ‘Help me against my opponent!’ For a long time the judge refused to act, but at last he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or respect people, yet because of all the trouble this widow is giving me, I will see to it that she gets her rights. If I don’t, she will keep on coming and finally wear me out!’”
— Luke 18:3-5 (GNT)
In the face of tough situations, the natural temptation is to give up, feeling that you can’t continue. But is this truly the case? The truth is, no situation has the power to stop you unless you permit it. Situations only prevail when you decide to stop trying. However, if you choose to persist and keep moving forward, you will overcome.
Many believers today find themselves worn out because they allow life’s challenges to dictate their actions. But this is not how it’s meant to be. When you’re pushed to the wall, your responsibility is to push back, not surrender. You must consciously decide to apply pressure to your situation until it bends to your will. One effective way to do this is by refusing to quit, no matter how difficult it seems.
The parable of the persistent widow in our opening scripture demonstrates this principle. The widow’s relentless pursuit of justice eventually moved the judge to act. Though initially resistant, the judge said, “…Even though I don’t fear God or respect people, yet because of all the trouble this widow is giving me, I will see to it that she gets her rights. If I don’t, she will keep on coming and finally wear me out!’” (Luke 18:5 GNT). Her persistence wore out the resistance.
This story teaches us that situations must eventually yield when met with unwavering determination. As you progress through this year, make up your mind not to let challenges wear you out. Instead, press on until your circumstances bow to you. Hallelujah!
