“Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath. And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.” 2 Kings 22:1-2 (NKJV)
One thing I observed about the kings in the Bible is how differently they approached leadership. Some ascended the throne and did what was right in their own eyes, others focused on pleasing people, and only a few chose to do what was right in the sight of God. Interestingly, those who followed their own desires or sought to impress others never lasted long on the throne. Even when a few of them ruled for a while, they often brought judgment on themselves and their descendants.
Take King Ahab, for example. He followed his own ways and disregarded God completely. As a result, he came under severe judgment that extended to his family line. The word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Behold, I will bring calamity on you. I will take away your posterity and will cut off from Ahab every male in Israel, both bond and free. I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, because of the provocation with which you have provoked Me to anger and made Israel sin.” 1 Kings 21:21-22 (NKJV).
Did you see that? Ahab didn’t stop at rejecting God—he took wickedness to another level. The Bible says, “There was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up. And he behaved very abominably in following idols, according to all that the Amorites had done, whom the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.” 1 Kings 21:25-26 (NKJV).
Later, Ahab was killed in battle (1 Kings 22:37). When his son Ahaziah became king, he also did evil in the sight of the Lord, and his reign was cut short. The Bible records, “Ahaziah died according to the word of the Lord, which Elijah had spoken. Because he had no son, Jehoram became king in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.” 2 Kings 1:17 (NKJV).
Because of the judgment that came during Ahab’s time, Ahaziah left no heir. The throne was stripped from their family because both father and son refused to honor God.
Beloved, as you grow in your Christian walk, make it your life’s goal to do what is right in the sight of God. Refuse to live recklessly or to provoke God with your choices and actions. Set your heart on pleasing Him in all you do. It won’t just bring blessings to your life; it will also secure blessings for your children. Hallelujah!
