A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness to the bones. —Proverbs 14:30 (NKJV)
God, in His infinite mercy, created every one of us with such uniqueness that He doesn’t want us to envy our neighbor in any way. But the devil does everything he can to ensure this is not the case. He sometimes tempts us to envy our neighbors because of who they are or what they have. However, you must not give in to his tricks. It is his desire to cause confusion and make you walk in the path of envy, but you must deny him that opportunity to manipulate you.
Envy is not a healthy path to tread in life. It has brought confusion into many homes and relationships, causing people to be at loggerheads with one another. Its end result is only destruction, which is why the Bible says in our opening Scripture that envy is rottenness to the bones. How true!
Wrath is cruel and anger is an overwhelming flood, but who is able to stand before jealousy? —Proverbs 27:4 (AMP)
Therefore, it is important that you overcome envy in every way possible. You might say, “But these things are not always easy to do.” Well, it can be very simple; you just need to apply a few strategies, and envy will not overcome you.
First, you need to understand that God created you in a unique way. Whoever you are and whatever you have, you must realize that you are uniquely made and can never be exactly like anyone else. It doesn’t matter whether you have so much or so little. Having little or looking average does not make you any less unique. You are still a one-of-a-kind creation.
Second, you need to understand that God’s grace upon your life is different from the grace upon someone else’s life. Learn to appreciate your own grace and focus on your path. When you envy others, you only appreciate the grace upon their lives while neglecting your own. Others excel because they appreciate the grace of God in their lives, cherishing and walking in it, which is why you became envious. If you do the same, God’s grace in your life will increase and bring you into the spotlight as well.
Third, you need to know that we do not all share the same timing for God’s blessings. Everyone has their time and their turn, so learn to embrace yours and wait for it. The fact that someone else has achieved what you have not yet achieved does not mean God has abandoned or forgotten you. It only means that His schedule for you, according to the appointed time, is yet to come. Don’t fall into the trap of envy; wait on the Lord for your timing.
Remember, God didn’t create you to forget you. He created you to love you and lavish His care upon you. Hold on to that truth and reciprocate His love. If you work on these three things, you will surely overcome the power and hold of envy. Praise God!
