“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such, there is no law.” — Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
As you progress in your Christian walk, one of the critical things you must practice is controlling your emotions. While this may seem simple, it significantly impacts your life as a believer. If you want to build great relationships, you need to control your emotions. If you aspire to be a person others trust and enjoy working with, emotional control is essential. Moreover, if you desire to represent Jesus Christ effectively in your sphere of influence, emotional mastery is non-negotiable. Ultimately, the quality of life you experience as a believer hinges on your ability to manage your emotions.
Unfortunately, many believers struggle in this area. Doors of opportunities have been closed, wonderful relationships lost, and harm caused—all because of a lack of emotional control. Some have even entangled themselves in avoidable problems for this very reason. However, you can decide to walk a different path. Make up your mind to control your emotions.
Self-control is one of the fruits of the Spirit and manifests as you yield to the Holy Spirit’s leadership in your life. So, take this seriously and refuse to let your emotions take charge. Be the master of your emotions, not the other way around.
The Bible emphasizes this truth: “It is better to be patient than powerful. It is better to win control over yourself than over whole cities.” — Proverbs 16:32 (GNT). It also says, “If you cannot control your anger, you are as helpless as a city without walls, open to attack.” — Proverbs 25:28 (GNT). These scriptures highlight the importance of emotional control. Therefore, make it a priority in your life. Stay conscious of this truth and choose to lead your emotions instead of letting them lead you.
