“…and do not forbid to speak with tongues…” 1 Corinthians 14:39 (NKJV)

A very controversial subject in the Body of Christ today is the subject of speaking in tongues. Some have said it is not for everybody and some others have said there are fake tongues today, but the question is, what does the Bible say about speaking in tongues? It says we should not forbid speaking in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:39). And the reason for this is because it is a language the Spirit of God gives to us believers to be able to communicate deep secrets, hidden truths and have a deeper relationship with God. But because most people do not understand the blessedness of tongues, they speak ill about it and deprive themselves from speaking in tongues, thus missing out on the whole blessing that speaking in tongues has to offer.

I remember speaking to a lady many years ago who had asked how she could be speaking in a language that she did not understand? However, I took out time to explain these things to her that she may gain understanding and in the long run, she spoke in tongues. Beloved, the fact that you do not understand the subject of speaking in tongues does not mean it is wrong. You may also not understand what you are saying, but that doesn’t mean you’re doing the wrong thing either. As a matter of fact, when you speak in tongues,  most often, you wouldn’t understand what it is you are saying, except the Holy Spirit gives you interpretation. “Why shouldn’t I understand what I am saying?”, you might ask. The reason is that it is a spiritual language and the Bible says “…he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries…” I Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV) Did you see that? Neither you nor anyone around you may understand you because you are speaking mysteries in the spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can grant interpretation if you ask Him. So, do not deprive yourself of this wonderful blessing because of a misunderstanding. That shouldn’t be your focus, instead focus on the fact that, tongues is a language that was embedded in your spirit when you received Jesus Christ into your life. It can change your life completely and give you direction from God. All you need to do is speak in tongues as often as you can. Hallelujah!
