What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. —Philippians 4:9 (ESV)
One of the best things about the Christian life is its uniqueness; it is real, true, and full of promise. Christianity is real because it is practical, true because you can test it and see the results, and promising because it holds more hope than anything else. However, many Christians have not taken full advantage of this life. They don’t realize that the wealth God promised us is found in practicing His Word and following His principles.
Being a Christian is not just about confessing Christ; that is merely the birth into a new life. When a baby is born, that isn’t the end but the beginning. A baby learns to eat, walk, talk, and grow. In the same way, when we become Christians, we are expected to practice the Christian life. This includes spiritual activities like winning souls, praying, studying the Word, walking by faith, and so much more.
Sadly, many Christians are not concerned with being practical in their faith. They think that those who engage deeply in spiritual disciplines are “overdoing it,” but this is not so. When you are born into the world, you are meant to live and move, not remain stagnant in one spot. A Christian who does not practice their faith is like a child who never learns to walk or talk—spiritually underdeveloped and unable to function as intended.
We must understand that true Christianity begins with practice. God wants every Christian to live out the faith Jesus demonstrated: having a relationship with the Word, fellowshipping with the Holy Spirit, helping the sick and oppressed, and preaching the gospel. The Bible declares, “By this it is evident who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother” (1 John 3:10, ESV). Therefore, make a conscious decision today to be a practicing Christian, for the blessings that follow are enormous. Hallelujah!
