The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart—These, O God, You will not despise. —Psalms 51:17 (NKJV)
King David, in our opening text, communicated one of the most important truths every believer should know to have a pleasant and rewarding walk with God. When he mentioned a broken spirit, what was he trying to convey? He was speaking about a humble, quiet, gentle, and patient spirit. He was talking about total submissiveness to God—a virtue that is rarely found these days, yet holds the key to a fruitful relationship with God the Father.
Beloved, if you ever want to experience God moving in your life consistently, you must learn to be broken and humble before Him. You must drop every form of pride, arrogance, disobedience, and stubbornness. A person with these negative qualities will have a hard time walking with God because God is highly principled and detests such traits. That is why the Bible clearly states in James 4:6 that …God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble. —James 4:6 (NKJV). From this, we discover that God is looking for a broken and contrite heart, which can also be described as a humble and meek spirit.
Why is God looking for these specific qualities? A person with a humble heart is sensitive to God, recognizes His voice, and takes action exactly when and where God wants. Such an individual can discern when God is moving, when He is about to do something, or when He wants to avert danger. A humble person walks closely with God and understands His desires for different seasons of life. Above all, God can guide and help them without any difficulty. This is the best way to live because you will never miss God’s direction.
Therefore, make a conscious decision to cultivate humility before God. Study His Word more deeply because it teaches obedience, patience, and submissiveness. Dedicate time to prayer and fasting, as these disciplines condition your spirit and keep you attuned to God and His voice. God bless you!
