…fill your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise: things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and honorable. —Philippians 4:8 (GNT)
As you grow in your relationship with God, one of the things you must learn is to guard what you allow into your mind. Your mind plays an important role in shaping your attitudes, decisions, and actions. Whatever you constantly think about will eventually influence how you see yourself, others, and the situations around you.
Unfortunately, many believers spend more time thinking about their problems, the offenses they have suffered, and the things that are not working than they spend meditating on the goodness and faithfulness of God. However, God wants you to learn to direct your thoughts toward things that are good, pure, true, and worthy of praise.
Someone might ask, “But how do you think about good things when there are so many challenges around you?” You do so by deliberately choosing what receives your attention. You may not always have control over what happens around you, but you can learn to control what you dwell on. Instead of constantly entertaining negative thoughts, choose to remember God’s faithfulness, meditate on His promises, and focus on the good things He has placed in your life. Remember what the Bible says:
Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. —Romans 12:2 (GNT)
This shows that the transformation God desires begins with a change in the way you think.
Therefore, make a conscious decision to fill your mind with things that deserve praise. Be careful about the conversations you engage in, the content you consume, and the thoughts you repeatedly entertain. When negative thoughts arise, do not allow them to take root in your heart. Turn your attention to God’s Word and choose to dwell on what builds your faith and strengthens your relationship with Him.
