“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.” — 1 Corinthians 14:14 (NKJV)
Having emphasized the importance of praying in tongues, you must understand that it is a language that allows you to communicate with God without any interference from the devil and his cohorts. It secures your communication with God and prevents all kinds of manipulation from the forces of darkness. Therefore, your inability to understand what you are saying should not trouble you. Rather, it should be a source of joy, knowing that you are communicating directly with God and building yourself up in your most holy faith (Jude 1:20). You might ask, “But what if I am cursing myself? How would I know?”
First, speaking in tongues is an utterance given to us by the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:4). The Holy Spirit will never put a curse on your lips; instead, He gives you blessings to declare. This is why the Bible says, “For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.” — 1 Corinthians 14:2 (NKJV).
This verse lets us know that what you say in tongues is never a curse. You are speaking mysteries, which are the deep truths of God spoken over your situations to make you a master and an overcomer in all you do. So, do not worry. Go ahead and pray in tongues often. Focus on God during your prayer time, rather than dwelling on the specific sounds coming out of your mouth.
If you truly want to understand what you are praying, ask the Holy Spirit for the interpretation. Do this not out of fear that you are cursing yourself, but to receive direction and confirmation when He speaks to you. Do not avoid speaking in tongues just because you do not understand it. God understands, and that is all that matters. Praise God!
