“…let no one become immoral or unspiritual like Esau, who for a single meal sold his rights as the elder son…” —Hebrews 12:16 (GNB)

Many years ago, I read the story of Esau and Jacob and it touched me a great deal because there was so much to learn from it. The Bible recorded that, one day Jacob was cooking some bean soup, and Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry and said to Jacob, I’m starving; give me some of that red stuff. And Jacob answered saying “I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son” So Esau in response to that, said “all right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do to me then? But Jacob insisted saying first make a vow that you will give me your rights” (Genesis 25:29-32) which Esau finally made and gave his rights to Jacob. He took the food, ate and drank and got up and left not understanding the gravity of what he had done. For a morsel of food, he traded his birthright forever. The attitude he displayed there showed that he didn’t really care for his birthright and the reason was because he didn’t have the right values. Instead of magnifying his birthright and treating it with utmost care, he said, “what good will my rights do to me” – Genesis 25:32 (GNB) Did you see that? He had an opportunity to make a choice between his birthright and his stomach, but His values prompted him to choose wrongly.

Guess what? In the future when he wanted to receive his father’s blessing, he was turned away because he could not find a way to change what he had done, even though in tears he looked for it (Hebrews 12:16-17 GNB). His values played a fast one on him and in the long run he was stranded. Now, this applies to us today as well. When our values in life are on the wrong things, it will always rob us of a bright future that God has destined for us. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we set our values right. Make up your mind to have your values placed on the right things, the things that will help you grow in life and be the man or woman that God has destined you to be. Don’t waste your time with matters that won’t add value to your life, see to it that you set aside all such and focus on the things that will advance you in life. And for the records I would like to say, your first major value should be God, His kingdom, His righteousness and eternity. If these four things are precious to you, there is no telling how far you would go in life. Because your actions will be governed by the opinions of God not your fleshly desire. So, I encourage you today to re-evaluate your priorities and set them right. Love the things that God loves and hate the things that God hates. Be careful to stay away from choices that will jeopardize your future. Get involved in things that have eternal values and set your affections on the things of God, for it is written “…seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you…” Matthew 6:33 (NKJV) Therefore, let God and His kingdom become your priority Praise God!

TODAY’S RHEMA

The wrong values in life, will always rob us of God’s plan for our lives!
