“And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.” ”Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time…” Luke 4:12-13 (NKJV)

The devil is an opportunist and will seek every chance he gets to work against a Christian. Our role as Christians is to ensure that we do not give the devil the opportunity to take advantage of us. A close look at the scripture above and other scriptures that preceded the conversation, reveals that the devil was trying to tempt our Lord Jesus Christ but he failed. The Bible further records that when he was done trying to tempt Him and didn’t succeed, he departed from Him till another opportunity to tempt Jesus presented itself again. Now, a Christian has the responsibility not only to worship God but also to understand the schemes and devices used by the devil so that he doesn’t fall prey. The account in the book of Luke 4:2-4 (NKJV) lets us know that after Jesus had been fasting for forty days, He became hungry because He ate nothing in those days. So the devil seized the opportunity, to tempt Jesus saying, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”- Luke 4:4 (NKJV)

Now, a clear look at the scriptures shows us that the devil came to Jesus when He was hungry and he was hungry because he had been fasting and had not eaten for forty days. The devil saw it as an opportunity to offer Him food, but Jesus did not fall for it. You know why? Because He knew the schemes of the devil. Today, many believers, being ignorant of the schemes of the devil have fallen for his deception. He offered them several things they have always desired and they couldn’t resist it. Some have fallen because of money offered to them, or position of authority, or fame and so on. Many have exchanged their soul because they got a tempting offer from the devil. However, this isn’t the plan of God for you as a Christian. So, stand firm in your faith, stand firm in God and let the word of God be the principle by which you live. Stand firm and let the word of God guide you and satisfy you. Above all, watch and pray so that you do not fall for the schemes of the devil. Do not jump at every offer because it fulfils your desire. Check every offer that comes to you with the eyes of the spirit so that you do not end up giving up your faith in God for material things that have no eternal security. Do not give the devil room to toy with your life, do not allow what you get from the devil take away the nature of God that is within you and the glorious life that awaits you after this life. Halleluiah!
